Why my family won’t be Planking
My kids are toddlers. Very smart toddlers might I add. They love to repeat things and are seriously little human sponges. They remember everything. They are however still kids. If they see other kids jumping up and down it only makes them want to jump too. It worries me when I see television with them or hear music. If they hear or see something they will want to do as they see or hear. I question whether my kids will ever get caught up on stupid trends. It’s my job as a mom to educate them and guide them to make the right choices
Lately the news, blogs and my social media streams have been filled with this new trend called “Planking”.
Planking is one of those new things getting attention of all ages. Everyone seems interested to know or do what this new trend of planking is.
What is planking?
Planking is as described by Wikipedia , “the practice of lying down flat with arms to the side , to mimic a wooden plank. It has its origins in the ‘lying down game’.”
At first I thought, this is stupid. Who really waste their time lying on the floor in that position for a certain amount of time? Then I thought, well It does look like some yoga pose maybe it is a cool thing for some people but not my type of thing. However reports now show even celebrities jumping the bandwagon. They’re doing this everywhere and taking pictures of them doing it. This trend is seen as funny and cool.
Then I came across 2 blog posts that implied this may be linked to slavery.
How so? A popular gossip site also had some interesting insights and unflattering images related to ‘planking’. And according to CourtneyLuv.com, ‘planking’ is related to slavery. She did a little research and found out that “slaves were chained and attached to ‘plank’ beds. They were forced to lay face down with their arms by their side and their wrist chained to their waist. Some were even stacked on top of each other with no room to move.”
The position and action much like what this ‘planking’ trend is. As I spoke to my husband he remembers also reading about the transporting of slaves and said yes it’s true this is what much research has shown.
Courtneyluv.com also had some images that showed how slaves were transported.
Why is this still a cool trend?
Maybe it’s because it was originally called the “Lying down game” and because it started off some place in Australia. I feel it’s another way of people trying to take something negative and turn it into positive. Much like the ‘N’ word, just because you are using it as a way to refer to your friends doesn’t make it a nicer word or change its history. It is still hurtful and derogatory.
We forget that we not all think alike. Call it ‘cultural sensitivity’ if you will.
While planking may seem cool and fun to some my opinion of planking is that it’s a very ignorant trend.
Needless to say, my family will not be planking.
