Grapefruit Buttermilk Granita {Sweet Life}

Grapefruit Buttermilk Granita {Sweet Life}

Citrus season in Texas is our favorite time of the year!! My girls simply can not get enough of these juicy ruby gems.  Ruby red grapefruits make their way into every meal of the day. Fresh squeezed juice for breakfast, ruby segments served alongside lunch, a grapefruit dressing for our salad at dinner and gently coaxed into a dreamy buttermilk granita for dessert.

The original red grapefruit was found in the Valley more than 70 years ago growing on a pink grapefruit tree. Named the Ruby Red, this naturally sweet discovery earned Texas the reputation of raising the world’s finest grapefruit. Today Texas produces two trademarked categories of red grapefruit – Ruby-Sweet and Rio Star. Both have red interiors and a rosy blush on the peel. Texas Red Grapefruit was named one of Saveur Magazine’s Top 100 Favorites for 2002.    – from

This granita is simple to make, lightly sweetened and brimming with a Texas punch of Ruby Red Grapefruit.

Can’t find ruby reds in your area? Substitute with the grapefruit of your choice or replace with orange juice, lemon juice or lime juice.  Enjoy!

    You make me want to try this which is a real compliment because I have never been a fan of grapefruit, but what you have presented looks like a work of art.

    I've never never tried grapefruit. Is that weird? Lol. I know it's very acidic. I imagine it be great and cooling for summer!

    Oh, wow! Granita with buttermilk sounds so rich and refreshing. I've never made granita, but will give this a try soon. Thanks!

    When I lived in the Rio Grande Valley, one of the things I loved most is the citrus. Loving the buttermilk touch to give the granita some texture. Delish and brilliant!
